MY PRACTICE

APPROACH IN MANAGEMENT

Management is handled concurrently under two headings; firstly to maximise medication used in the control and relief of symptoms and secondly to discover those triggering factors and allergies which precipitate or exacerbate symptoms.

INDOOR MOULDS AND THE DUST MITE

Indoor moulds have proved quite a problem in South Australia and one of my tasks has been to assist the SA Housing Trust in the identification and resolution of this problem. Indoor moulds are identified by a technique known as the "tape-lift" and the use of a Rotor Rod Sampler. If you are interested in these investigations please mention it to me when you see me.

THE WATER PIK*

This simple and neglected treatment which one of my patients nicknamed "The Nasal Water Spa" is widely used in the health resorts in Europe. It is a painless but uncomfortable procedure. It simply removes unpleasant mucus from the nasal airway in chronic rhinitis. It is an adjunct to treatment and does not replace the appropriate use of antibiotics and nasal steroid sprays. Unfortunately the Water pik has recently become unavailable in Australia but plans are afoot to discover another source. In the meantime I have been told that similar benefits may be achieved by using a "Netty Pot" which looks like a glorified small teapot used in Asian countries for centuries. The ENT surgeons encourage some patients with chronic sinusitis to sniff warm salt water from a cup, but I find very few manage this; with a water pik the patient literally flushes a litre of water through the nose! There is a web page on nasal irrigation with the water pik. If you know of a source of the "Dental Water Pik" please write to me.
